A bit of silliness

                                                            Rapunzel and the Witch

Once upon a time there lived Rapunzel. She lived in a castle with her knights.

One day, a witch riding a dragon with an army of skeletons came stomping into the castle. Rapunzel said, "Attack!" The knights charged at the army of skeletons. One of the knights said to Rapunzel, "We need more fighters." Rapunzel called the army of minions. The minions came with banana swords. They ate some of the banana's and threw them on the floor. All of the skeleton's slipped over and died. Then the knights fought the 2 dragons. They were all ganging up on the witch. The minions threw the banana's at the witch's eyes and she was blind, then taken to jail.

They all lived happily ever after.

Miniature Gardens

Hi there,

Room 2 students will be bringing their beautiful miniature gardens/farms home on Thursday 27th October 2016 (the day after Pet Day). Please make suitable arrangements if you have any concerns about getting your miniature garden home safely. I know the children are very excited about taking their work home, however are a little concerned the ride might wreck their hard work.

Thanks,
Mrs Howie

Cross Country

Have a read of some of the fabulous writing we did about cross-country with Mrs Simpson on Tuesday!

                     Cross-Country

On the most exciting day of the year, I said ‘Wow! Some people have already done a whole lap.’ It was cross country. Although I wasn’t a fan of running, because I have asthma and running just isn’t my kind of thing. At least I gave it a try, but I came 20th. I actually felt proud of myself.
THE END

Cross Country
Last Friday was the amazing cross country. We did cross country. It was exhausting. All the parents were there, clapping and clapping. I got so tired I felt like I was going to faint, but I said to my brain, ‘Stop! Keep running.’ At the end, I charged. Yay! I was so proud of myself.

Cross Country
Last Friday was the awesome cross country. When we were running up the hill, parents were cheering and clapping. On our second lap I was exhausted and sweating. When we saw the swamp it was wet and muddy. There was a dead cow in the swamp and when we went in it I nearly fell in. I got my shoes muddy.

Cross Country
Yay! Today is the day. Cross country! “On your marks, get set, go”, said Mrs Simpson. Off we go through thistles everywhere. The bog is horrible. We got through there. The finish line. Done! Good, I came 5th.

Pet Day Art - Miniature Farms and Gardens

                                PET DAY ART DISPLAY

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Whānau,

On Tuesday 25th October (week 3), Room 2 will spend the afternoon creating their own miniature farms/gardens. I encourage students to have a good think about their own creations and start collecting any items they wish to include. The school will not be providing any items, except sand, that will go towards this, so everything your child needs to create his/her masterpiece will need to come from home, including the base (meat tray recommended). The miniature farms/gardens, will be on display in the hall on Pet Day, which is Wednesday 26th October.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Please keep all items at home until Tuesday 25th October.

Kind Regards,

Cara Howie

Tuesday... Helicopter Day!

The wind started blowing, everyone was waiting to see what was going to happen. We heard a noise, it sounded like a helicopter. It was! We saw it, a helicopter, it said air force on it. It flew around twice and then it landed. One person came out and talked to Mrs Simpson. Room seven and eight got to go in the helicopter first and then we did. We lined up and went in. We got to see all of the buttons and then we went out. We got to ask some questions. The man told us that the propeller makes it go up and down and the other propeller makes it turn. When the helicopter came it was really loud. The helicopter was a NH-90. The helicopter is very strong and powerful. Its very dangerous because the propeller can cut you.

Suddenly I heard something. It was very noisy. I saw it was a helicopter. The propeller went around as fast as a cheetah then it stopped and the helicopter landed.

Why is there lightening in a storm?

Why is lightening in storms?

Thor and Spider-man were battling. Thor threw lightening at Spider-man. Spider-man dodges the lightening and it hits Earth.

That is why lightening is in a storm.

By Eddie

How is there lightening in a storm?

Lightening is yellow, it is made from clouds bashing together. They bash together because they are too heavy and full of water. The clouds turn black, dark ad grey.

That is how lightening is in a storm.

Art with Miss Simpson

Art

We have started a cool piece of art with Miss Simpson - OCTOPUS ART!  We're learning all about the animals in the sea in science, so we thought this art would be perfect!  First we had to paint our 'sea' with blue which is a cold colour.  Next we had to paint another piece of paper with hot colours like red, yellow and orange.  We will use this to make our octopus.  We also practiced drawing an octopus, and this was really hard!  We knew that an octopus has eight legs, but have no idea what they eat or what colour they really are!  Hopefully we'll be able to find this out soon.  We can't wait to show you our art when it's finished.

Moss' Chicks Come To Room 2

This morning Mrs Rider bought some chicks to school to share with Room 2.

What do they look like?
The chicks are fluffy and soft. They are all different colours. Some chicks are black and white, other chicks are golden and one chick is black. Some chicks have little golden dots on them. They are very little, but have grown a lot since they first hatched. They will grow much bigger. The chicks are only four weeks old. Some of the chicks have blue eyes and some chicks have brown eyes. At times you can see a golden fleck in their eyes. The chicks are all covered in cuddly feathers. Their feathers look pretty and adorable now, but as they grow older they will harden.

What do the chicks do?
The chicks eat bananas, which Mrs Rider explained is their favourite food. They hop up peoples arms and scurry across the newspaper on the ground. The chicks like to snuggle up with people, especially Max. The chicks peck at things when they are nervous. This is a defense mechanism to protect themselves. They try to run away from people that they don't know very well, for example they tried to escape our circle by running between the gaps. The chicks try to fly, but they actually can't. The baby feathers that the chicks have now are malting so that their adult feathers can come through. The chicks are quite shy because they don't know us.

Some facts about the chicks
* The chicks incubated for 21 days in their eggs before they hatched.
* The chicks squeak when you squeeze them too hard because it hurts and they can't breath.
* The chicks all came from different mothers, but only one hen raised them.
* Their little tweets might mean that they are stressed.

Keeping Safe On Our Bikes with Officer Cree

On Friday 4th of March Officer Cree came to Halcombe School to teach Room's 1 and 2 about bike safety. We started in the classroom where Officer Cree showed us how to put our helmets on properly. Before you put your helmet on you need to check that it has no cracks in it.

The first thing you need to do when you put your helmet on is slip it over your eyebrows. This is because it needs to protect your forehead and your brain. The next thing you need to check are the side straps. The straps that go around our ears need to form a tight V that finishes just under your ear. The third thing to check is that the chin strap is nice and tight. You should be able to fit 1 finger in between the strap and your chin and you should still be able to talk. It must be very tight. It is important that all the straps are tight and secure so that your helmet doesn't slip forwards and backwards, especially if you have a crash. If you have knobs at the back of your helmet you need to tighten them up last.

Officer Cree said that skating helmets were not the best helmets for protecting your head when you are on a bike because they do not do a good job of protecting your forehead.

We left the classroom and practiced putting on our helmets safely. Then we got into four groups and took our bikes to the court where Officer Cree had set up an obstacle course.

Everyone took turns riding their bikes up the court and around the cones. Officer Cree told us it was important to focus on skill and technique. It was not a race. It was important to slow down because you might crash into another person or the cones.

Some of the techniques we practiced included getting on and off your bike on the left side of your bike. This is important so that the chain on the bike does not hurt you. It is also important if you are on the rode to get on and off your bike on the left side so that your bike is in between you and the cars.

We learnt how to indicate using our arms. If you are turning left you need to hold out your left arm. If you are turning right, you need to hold out your right arm. It is important to indicate so that other people on the road know where you are going and then you wont have a crash. Before you indicate and turn, you must look over your shoulder to check that no cars or other traffic are coming.

It is very important to stop for pedestrians so that no one gets hurt or run over. We practiced with Mrs Davies' class and Mrs Turner's class when they were going to the pool.

At the end of the day Sophia thanked Officer Cree on behalf of all of us. Then we said good bye and went back to class.

We all really enjoyed learning with Officer Cree because it is important to learn how to keep ourselves safe on our bikes.

We are all really proud of each other and ourselves because everyone had a great attitude towards the day. We all showed Officer Cree respect, and everyone was an adventurer because we all took risks. The best thing about the day was that we all achieved something new! We learnt lots of things about keeping ourselves safe and we can all ride safely on the road.

Writing in Room 2

This week in Room 2 we have been learning about writing a recount. A recount is something that happened in the past. When we talk about the past we mean that it is when something has already happened. In a recount there are people who are important to the story and there might be animals too. We are carefully planning stories that we are going to write next week. Our stories are going to be about something special that happened in the holidays.
